Oba Oyebade Lipede Early life
Born into royalty on January 26, 1915 in Erunwon, Prince Mofolorunso Oyebade Lipede, later to become the 9th Alake of Egbaland, was destined for greatness. His father, Prince Adebowale Lipede, a member of the Jibodu Ruling House of Ake, Abeokuta, was a hardworking farmer and an early convert to Christianity. His mother, Adeline Abiola Lipede, was a dedicated trader. Prince Adebowale’s maternal grandfather had once ruled in the Egba homestead, further rooting Prince Oyebade in a lineage of leadership.
Prince Oyebade’s early education began at St. Peter’s School, Ake, Abeokuta, in 1927, where he excelled academically and actively participated in athletics and football. Influenced by notable teachers like Mr. Layode, he developed a strong moral foundation and disciplined outlook on life. His secondary education took him to Abeokuta Grammar School, where he studied under distinguished educators like Rev. Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti and Rev. B. Kuye, before transferring to CMS Grammar School, Lagos. At CMS, he earned the nickname “M.O. LIPO,” served as a Prefect, and even held the position of Acting Senior Prefect.
Following his education, Prince Oyebade began his public service career with the Department of Customs & Excise on May 17, 1937, in Lagos. Though he had initially aspired to serve the church, he was drawn to the Customs Service by its striking uniform and the opportunity to work aboard ships. This pivotal decision marked the start of a journey defined by diligence, integrity, and leadership, setting the stage for his eventual rise to the throne as the Alake of Egbaland.
