Oba Lipede’s efforts earned him widespread acclaim. He was not only a leader for his kingdom but also a respected ambassador for Yoruba culture and traditions on the international stage.
During his famous installation speech ” I wish to appeal to all well meaning industrialist and financiers throughout the country to come over to Egbaland and establish ”. During his 90yrs birthday celebration Egba people turned out in their thousands to celebrate the 90th birthday of the royal father little did they realized that the week long lavish celebration grand finale for their beloved ruler.
Barely had the euphoria that accompanied the celebration come to a close when Egba are to be jolted by the least expected reports as the news broke a stunned silence befell a normally bubbly town. Tributes flowed in quick succession from indigene and non indigenes alike, a condolence opened at his GRA residence revealed a man held in highest esteem, his character was described in words such as virtuous, hardworking etc .
During burial fully aware of what the monarch represented in his life time Egba people in unison set about giving their beloved royal father a befitting passage. What better way to pay homage to an exceptional monarch than by halting all activities for a day and ensuring that their Royal father receives a befitting burial. The state government in a clear demonstration of support for Egba tradition and honour to the late monarch gave its blessing to curfew and that was how Abeokuta stood still for its revered Royal father.
Oba Mofolorunso Oyebade Lipede 1 ruled as Alake of Egbaland from 1972 to 2005,
recording the second longest reign of 33 years, after Oba Ladapo Ademola, who reigned for 42 years. Papa was married to Mama Megan and also shared important parts of his life with Alhaja. In his final years, he was accompanied by Olori Bimpe. Oba Lipede had six children, including Prince (Dr.) Adeniran Lipede, Prince Folorunsho Lipede, Prince Dotun Lipede, Princess Ayo Lipede-Mseka, Princess (Professor) Biola Lipede, and Princess Adeluola Lipede.
